I have lived all over the USA, and have encountered a lot of crazy drivers in my day. From the crazy cabbies in New York to the old ladies of south Florida... I have seen a lot of madness on the roads. But all that I have seen is NOTHING compared to the people on the roads in Naples. Couple the habits of the drivers here with the TERRIBLE ROADWAYS (both layout and condition) and you have a recipe for disaster!

Take for instance today. I was coming home from work and got trapped in the Capodimonte/Capodichino area in the traffic. You cant merge properly here. They dont let you! God forbid you take 3 seconds away from a person here! You know the "Zipper" idea of merging? You know one in the lane on the highway goes, then one from the on ramp goes. Not here. You end up with 3 lanes on the highway, with 5 cars in a row because people refuse to be courteous.

Now, have those 5 cars all trying to cut you off, get in your lane, flash thier lights and honk their horns because the people in front of them wont go. It is annoying as anything!

Are we done? Heck no! What about the motorini's (motor scooters). They think they own the road! They weave in and out of traffic and EXPECT you to get out of the way. Guess what a-hole... you are a car, and should stay in your lane too! Give me a break! You aren't any more special than the other 50 cars piled up in front of you. Dont honk at me because I wont move a foot to let you pass.

What about low traffic days? Well, if you arent exceeding the speedlimit by 50 KM (at a minimum) you will get run over. If you dont move for the guy behind you, he honks and flashes at you... oh, and rides your bumper too. Hit the brakes, I dare you. He will hit you!

Get off of any major highway and the roads will TEAR your car apart. My suspension is so out of whack its funny. There is no such thing as a smooth decent road here. There are so many pot holes, bumps, and just bad roads that you will not survive with a new car.

How do you solve the problem? How about speed cameras that actually give tickets in a reasonable amount of time. Germany knows how to do it! How about the polizia and carabineri patrol and pull people over. Give a freaking ticket on the spot for a-hole drivers. Oh, teach people to be courteous drivers. When there is obviously only enough room for one car to go down a road, dont speed up to get there first! Slow down and let the car already there go!

Dear Angry Jasen,
your story is simply wonderful!! even if you cannot explain why some people behave like that, you cannot avoid behaving like them... this is a survival fight... it seems you understood that very well, and this is just the first step to become "la sfaccimma della gente"... Please go on and tell us your experiences, as it is fantastic to hear from a foreigner the 'impressions' about our shitty people... we won't ask you for a solution as we cannot find any ourselves (except the H bomb, but I think this is not yet a feasible option...)...
By the way, at the moment I live very close to the Gricignano Navy support site and I read some concerns of the US government about the health of the US army over there (link)

Also, you might wish to comment on the famous triangle of death
please share your opinion with us!!!

Dear Jasen,

you gave yourself one possible answer to your main question, "why it is so bad": because people refuse to be courteous.

In short, people refuse to be courteous because courtesy and politeness can be "negative" traits in a widely aggressive society. In Scandinavia they have a proverb saying "in a conversation, when you raise the tone of your voice, when you start shouting, it's a sign that you have no more convincing arguments to sustain your position or your ideas". But in a society where the majority shouts from the beginning of any conversation, the one who tries to be polite and respectful will be ignored. The same applies for several aspects of living in a society and traffic is a good example.

When you say "You aren't any more special than the other 50 cars piled up in front of you"... that is what I'm talking about... There are many in this city that think of themselves as more "special" (better, smarter) of their neighbors. There are a lot of terms in the neapolitan dialect which reflect this attitude (maybe we will have to translate them for the foreigners who are unable to read the rest of the forums and the blog) and there are many who celebrate the "furbizia" of the neapolitans. "Furbizia" is a quality admired by some italians as a cunning knack of getting your own way - however dishonestly - and getting away with it. I have no idea if there's a English equivalent of that.

All of your ideas (speed cameras, police patrolling, instant fines, teaching people to be courteous drives) are rational. And do work with rational people who have developed a strong sense of community, justice and respect for the others. There are many who would agree and would be ready to start acting like courteous and polite people since tomorrow. But sooner or later they will give up their good will, as they will realize that the rest of the people will only laugh at their good manners and turn them against themselves. When the only way to get through traffic is to start acting like the others, then you'll also start behaving like the others. It becomes a survival necessity. Maybe you'll have already experienced this on yourself and if you still have not, you will.

A note about the police. You'll have probably seen many people in their motorini or scooters without wearing an helmet. This is not legal in Italy and you'll be fined for that. Now, in Naples there are many who choose not wear an helmet. Always. Some get a fine, some do not, some will pay the fine, some won't. But the most incredible part of this is that police and carabinieri often stop people wearing helmets more frequently than those who do not. The reason is that many thieves (and sometimes killers) wear helmet to not be recognized. The police prefer to stop those wearing helmets to check their identities. A lot of people who have done nothing have to waste their time because of this. Go figure.
