A 13-year-old boy who saw a mafia [camorra-ndr] murder in southern Italy, Naples, and identified the killer is living in a secret location under police protection, investigators said on Thursday.
The boy, who has not been named, was whisked away from the city of Naples with his family after he helped police arrest the accused killer of a mafioso who was shot dead last year while queuing at the ticket booth of an amusement park.

The boy's story, which police had tried to keep under wraps to protect his safety, was first revealed by a local newspaper on Wednesday and quickly picked up by the main Italian media.

Anti-mafia prosecutors hailed his courage, but some investigators said they feared the publicity may scare the boy, who will have to take the stand at the murder trial.

"This was an act of bravery and of civic sense, and above all an example for those adults who are much more cautious and back out," Naples' chief prosecutor Giovandomenico Lepore told Reuters.

"What is bizarre is that something which should be normal has become exceptional, and therefore the boy was forced to leave his city and live under protection because he could be at risk," he said.

Investigative sources said the boy, who was at the amusement park where the murder took place and was shown pictures of a dozen suspects by police, recognised 22-year-old Mario Buono as the man who shot and killed Nunzio Cangiano last August.

Police say the murder was part of a turf war between rival clans in the Camorra, Naples' branch of the Sicilian mafia.

Buono says he is innocent but Italy's highest court confirmed his arrest on the basis of the boy's statement.
