One of the problems in Naples, that I can see, is every one is very proud to be from here but nobody is willing to stand up and actually clean up the area and make it nice and show their pride!

Naples used to be a summer vacation home for Nero. While he was a bit crazy lighting things on fire at times, he was a smart guy and had to have had good taste. That means at one point this place was great. I can definatley see it too... the area it sits on is lined with beautiful (or what could be beautiful) mountains, beaches, and ancient ruins. With a little Tender Loving Care it could be beautiful again.

What if everyone got together one day to clean up a stretch of road? Pick up all the trash, put it in containers. Pull the nasty weeds growing out of the sidewalks, hit it with some weed killer? Basically beautify the area? Clean it up?

I would be glad to lead a Adopt a Highway program to get those of us here that want to make a change together to help clean up the area. Maybe we invite the media to come out and take pictures and interview us as to why we are doing it? Help raise awareness... from there maybe people will see others including foreigners standing up and trying to clean up. When we do a road, maybe get a donation from a sign company to give us a "This Road Adopted by SdG" and it becomes our responsibility to keep it picked up and looking nice!

In the states a lot of non-profit organizations do this and it does help!

I will start this here and now as a call to arms to hear if you are with the movement or not. Please translate to italian and post it elsewhere too!

Let's stop bitching about the problems and become part of the solution!

Fool, we born tired, we live for relaxing, don't you know?
Life is short, Jasen, take a look to the sea; it's beautiful, it inspire in us many feelings...

Born Tired = Born Lazy

Live for Relaxing = Admitting Defeat and not fixing the problem

Life is short = poor excuse.

These sayings are what makes Neapolitans hated by the rest of Italy and why we are wallowing in filth while living here.

What you're proposing is a good idea. So good that has been tried for decades by many associations, volunteers, clergymen, politicians... Schools adopted churches, now again abandoned. Private entrepreneurs adopted monuments too, now again full of graffiti. Recently the administration installed a statue of Gandhi in the Virgiliano park (a place I'd strongly suggest you to see) and a few days later the eyeglasses of the Mahatma were stolen by vandals. Just to make some recent example.

The fact that an american (or a foreigner in general) promoted the hundredth initiative of this kind will probably rise some attention in the media. But I see no premises why this specific one will succeed since all the others have failed.

The nice city of the past you were talking about surely existed. But it's not buried just under "some" pile of trash. It's the urban landscape, the buildings, the shape and architecture of entire neighborhoods, suburbs, slums that definitively suffocated it. Many areas were built without any criteria. Naples has been described as a "periferia senza centro" (I'm not sure if "suburb without a center" makes sense in English). Not mentioning the people who live in these areas. What would you do? Hit them with some weed killer too?

Speaking of weed killers, have a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesare_Mori
but in these times you can hardly imagine that kind of action
besides, such men don't live anymore among us

So what are you going to do? Sit on your ass all day and wait for the sun to shine through the toxic clouds.. come un lucertola? Move over.. make room.. let us all sit beside you.
