Italy: Mafia assets worth 150 million euros seized by investigators

Naples, 12 March(AKI) - Italian investigators have seized assets worth 150 million euros from an Italian businessman with alleged links to the Mafia organisation, known as the Camorra.

Gaetano Iorio, a businessman with ties to the powerful Casalesi clan, was the target of anti-Mafia investigators who confiscated material outside the southern city of Naples on Tuesday.

Sixteen luxury cars, farming materials, concrete mixers and other construction machinery as well as insurance policies and checking accounts were among the items seized by police.

Following a proposal from the prosecutor's office, a local court issued a decree for investigators to confiscate the items.

Iorio was previously convicted in 2005 for association with the Mafia.

He reportedly became very successful in the construction and concrete-making industry because of his alleged links with the Mafia.

The Casalesi clan suffered a blow in late February, when a group in charge of illegal rubbish trafficking was dismantled by police.

Police claimed the organisation illegally dumped over 8,000 tonnes of rubbish on agricultural land, in many cases with the consent of the landowner, and made a profit of more than 400,000 euros.

The Camorra reportedly runs the highly lucrative business of waste disposal in the southern region of Campania, where Naples is located.

Italian authorities have recently tried to take control of the refuse industry from the Camorra.

Italy's four main criminal organisations are the Cosa Nostra based in Sicily, the Camorra in Naples and nearby Campania, the 'Ndrangheta in the southern region of Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in the region of Puglia.
